The Vision
In 1990, Ralph Yanello, a lawyer with years of experience in law and business, realized that the traditional delivery of legal services was inefficient and costly. And, because of these barriers, many well-meaning employers ended up in court because they didn’t know how to navigate the complex web of employment laws.
So, Ralph started to research a new concept – how to make the law easy and affordable to access. The goal was to empower employers with knowledge by providing them with "smart information" through automation.
The Challenge
In 1994, Ralph brought together a team of California lawyer-writers and formed LawRoom. Our team embarked on an ambitious journey. We started building an employment law library from scratch. But, we had help. We formed a strategic alliance with Littler Mendelson, America's largest employment law firm. We built the library and Littler reviewed it for accuracy.
But, beyond providing clear information, we tackled one more major hurdle: how to instantly provide tailored answers that integrate the conflicting and overlapping requirements of California and federal laws into one answer. It was a daunting task because it had never been done.
To address this challenge, we developed proprietary software that carefully considers specific aspects of a company's profile. This allows LawRoom to do something that no one else on the Internet does: instantly
provide tailored answers.
In 1996--after spending 40,000 hours building the library and application--LawRoom launched an automated fax-back service for employers. And in 2000, we converted to a web-based employment law service. LawRoom now offers the California library for companies with California employees and the National library (federal law only) for companies with employees in all other states.
Our Growth and the Future
LawRoom introduced pro-active weekly email products: One-Minute Audit, Briefing, and LawQuiz. These products help keep employers informed and up-to-date. As a result, LawRoom grew from 400 corporate subscribers in 2000 to over 8,000 by 2004, with users in all 50 states.
But, LawRoom is not sitting on its past successes. We’re building other cost-effective employment
law compliance products with the same attention to detail and quality:
Online training
Ready-to-use forms and policies
Customized OSHA plans
Our Goal
In providing weekly updates and customized answers to over 6,000 questions, our goal is to help you understand your legal rights and obligations. While we do not replace lawyers or offer legal advice, we do provide accurate, clear, and concise answers so that you can make more informed decisions.
